Student Textbook Resources

The University Bookstore’s textbook rental program provides every undergraduate student access to their textbooks and course materials for a fixed fee per term. Students can choose to opt out of the textbook rental program each term.

Approximately 70%-80% of textbooks and course materials will be provided digitally. Students can access content anytime, anywhere — including 100% offline access. Physical textbooks of titles that do not have a digital version will also be provided as part of the textbook rental program.

How to review and order textbooks and course materials

Visit the Find Textbooks and Course Materials page to review and order your course materials for all classes you are enrolled in for the current term.

How to access digital textbooks and course materials

Digital textbooks and course materials included in the rental program will be available in AsULearn on the first day of class.

  • Click on the “My Materials” link within any of your AsULearn courses.
    • This will open the AsULearn Dashboard, which will display all of your course materials for each active course in which you are enrolled.
  • If your course materials are not available in the "My Materials" tab, please contact your instructor.

How to access physical textbooks and purchased course materials

Physical textbooks of titles that do not have a digital version will also be provided as part of the textbook rental program. All physical textbooks and purchased course materials can be shipped directly to students via UPS for a $10 flat fee or ordered for pick up at the Bookstore.

How to request a print copy of a Cengage Unlimited textbook

If your textbook is provided through Cengage Unlimited, you can rent a bound physical copy via the Cengage platform. The University Bookstore is not able to provide loose leaf print copies of Cengage Unlimited textbooks.

To rent a bound copy of a Cengage Unlimited textbook, follow the instructions in the video.

  • Select the four month rental option.
  • Students who elect to rent textbooks via the Cengage platform are responsible for shipping and handling and for returning rentals directly to Cengage. These books cannot be returned to the University Bookstore.

Opting out of the rental textbook program

  • Students can choose to opt out of the textbook rental program each term. Some students may choose to opt out if they are student teaching, in clinicals, doing an internship, etc. However, if a student chooses to opt out, they will need to purchase required textbooks from an outlet of their choice.
  • If you would like to opt out, send a request to optout@appstate.edu include your name and Banner ID number.
  • Opt out deadlines:
    • Summer Session I: May 28.

  • Students who do not return rental textbooks by the deadline will be charged the cost of the book(s).
  • Textbooks must be returned in similar condition as received.
  • Damaged books are not accepted. Late returns may receive partial credit.
  • Any exception to this policy must have prior approval by one of the University Bookstore Textbook Managers.

The Bookstore provides an opportunity to sell your purchased textbooks through Online Buyback via MBS.

  • MBS is a third-party company that partners with the Bookstore for end-of-term buyback.
  • If your purchased textbooks have buyback value, you will print out the shipping label provided on the MBS website to ship the purchased books.
